As with Swaziland, my visit to Lesotho was part of World Challenge in 2007 but unlike Swaziland, I was there for only a few hours. A terrifying hour or so long jeep drive up a winding, crumbling road ( the Sani Pass) got us from South Africa into the mountain kingdom of Lesotho. The whole place seemed to appear out of nowhere - where jagged tops of mountains should have been, there was somehow an open plain covered in huts and in the distance, another layer of gigantic mountains. We drank (hideous) beer that looked like yak's milk but was very kindly given to us by villagers wrapped in colourful blankets. And to continue the culture-culture-culture thing, we had burgers in the incredibly touristy nearby 'highest pub in Africa'. An enjoyable few hours though, with incredible views. And then back down the terrifying Sani Pass.......
- BRING - a jumper, or buy a blanket there.
- TRY - beverages that are offered to you, but be prepared to be less than satisfied.
- AVOID IF - you are likely to throw up on the way up the mountain.
